swearing and violence in trailers

we have chosen to include swearing in our trailer in order to make it connect more into modern day life. We thought as a horror trailer the swearing gave it that sense of realism and it will help the audience connect to the trailer and be able to connect to the characters through their emotion. In this situation of swearing in our trailer it gives more effect on the emotions going through the characters head such as being scared/ angry and tormented this is why we have included it into our trailer as we feel that it gives it that bit more edge. Here are two examples of trailers which include swearing.

Horror magazine analysis

This is the horror magazine cover for the magazine Fangoria, This is not the type of magazine cover you would normally relate to a horror magazine. The colours are bright and bold and normally with a horror magazine you normally expect dark, grey colours. Although this is the case for this cover and some of their other covers their is still the stereotypical things in which you would find in a horror magazine. Such as the large main image of a horror character. Although this magazine doesn't seem as professional as magazines such as empire magazine you can still see what it is trying to advertise. The colours take away from the scary side that you know the films would hold. The bold masthead is doing just as you would expect which is appealing to the target audience. The target audience for people who buy this magazine would be people who are interested in 'Gore' and Horror films. The hidden message in the title is witty and clever as the magazine is doing just as it says. The red colour of the masthead also makes you think of blood and core which is stereotypical in a horror film.

Horror magazine analysis

This is another one of 'Empires'horror magazine covers the large upper-case font that is behind the main images head shows the strong man that they are trying to show. The image is of Leonardo Di Caprio who is a very well known actor. The fact that he is on the front of this poster is to connote the strong male lead role in a film. This is a role that we are predominantly used to seeing him playing the main good looking hero in action films. Another film he played in is the thriller 'shutter island' where again we see him playing the most predominant male role. This is typical in horror films to have a male hero. This works well for the type of film magazine to have this strong male role because it shows his strength. With the text actually going behind him it makes you believe his strength through the magazine cover. The fact that the strap-line is about a well known films makes you understand how good this film is going to be because it is really emphasizing on characters. The Masthead for this poster is in large big font so it predominantly is taking up a lot of the page not only that but ti means you are able to see straight away what magazine it is which is perfect for people that buy this regularly because they know what to expect. The large red font also makes it very bold and eye catching. Again the use of the font being overlapped by the head of Leonardo Di Caprio is also just pointing out him and making him stand out against the background.

Horror magazine analysis

This horror magazine uses a lot of low key lighting especially with the monster in the back ground, the use of the dark colours shows that this character is not a very nice one and is someone that people probably tend to try and avoid. The red text for the masthead could connote blood which is good for this type of film genre as they normally include a lot of body horror and violence so the use of red is a colour that shows the danger in the horror film. I like the way the text of 'the blind eye' is overlapped this gives it the effect that you are messed up. The dark colours show that this is going to be a dark film and the fact that the character in the background makes me think of the emotion people do when they are scared/ nervous so this could be a hint of what is going to be in the film.

horror poster analysis

Forget me not Horror/Thriller (2009) This film poster shows that again we can see the stereotypical female victim. The fact that she is being faded away shows that she is almost undoubtedly going to be who they kill off in the film and i think this works really well. Not only is she being faded away but she is turning into dust which could also been thought as being ash from her after she dies which gives off the subtle key theme of death. The easy thing about seeing that she is going to be the female victim is because she is a young, good looking female and this is a key thing that we repeatedly see within horror films of this kind. The fact that her eye is white is almost like it is being rolled back this gives off that idea of possession and being taken into a bad state of mind. Although we could connote that the white also shows her purity because white is a colour that we connect with purity and innocence in which we may think of this young female being. The photo used for this poster is not all that flattering for the young female but again shows her distress. The background of this poster is just dull and boring but then it shows the importance of the main character without giving too much away. I also think that the photo of the girl is like a mugshot showing that maybe she has done something wrong.

Horror poster analysis

House of wax (2005) Horror/ thriller USA On the poster of this horror film we can see the image is of a typical young female who is the normal victim that we see in horror films. She has blonde hair and we normally associate this with her drinking, smoking and sleeping around. The back ground is also of her as a wax figure. The white-ish image shows that she is pure or was pure and the fact that the wax is melting could symbolise the fact that her purity and innocence is melting away. The fact that the image is also off white could be another way to connote this. The dark shadows of her eyes make it that you don’t really know who she is, whether she is bad or a good person. It could be that her good side has gone and she has been taken over. The green shadow text is quite distorted so you read it and think that there is something wrong with you. Makes you feel as though it is messed up and it is all in your head. Links with the film because the film is quite weird and messed up. The shadowed text could also be the shadowing of their good past they had as the teenagers become part of a wax work. The tagline of this poster is quite cruel. ‘Prey, slay, display’ Gives off the impression that the victim is going to be in pain.

Horror poster analysis

D
rag me to hell is a 2009 American horror film. Here we have the typical victim being a younger good looking female. The victim looks like she is in danger by the facial expression shows that she is scared. The hell is symbolised by the fire which she is stood in. The killer we can see is the person that is dragging her down we can see that this creature is non-human. We can only see the arms of the killer. The angle makes it look as if she is being dragged down and we see that the killer is grabbing hold of her necklace pulling her down. The scenery around it is dark and cloudy which is something you would associate with horror films because it sets the scene. You can see in the background that is it a stereotypical place to have a horror film set it, in a field near some old houses. The fire is red; red is a colour that we would associate with danger. The white font against the background sticks out so it is easy to read. White also is a colour we would represent with purity and innocence. The large font reading ‘drag me to hell’ looks like it has scratches through it fits in with the theme of horror. The plot of this film is that the girl is a victim and she has obviously done something to make her end up in trouble. The tag line of this poster shows the outline of the story. She has everything everyone dreams of, which is why she matches up to being the typical victim because she has a boyfriend, a good job and has a lot going for herself.

Class Research: Favourite Type of Horror

My personal favourite type of horror is action, because I like that the action horror makes it exciting with the use of cross cuts. I like the way that action horror can be of any theme and they keep you gripped for the duration and have a less scary type of story because you always will have a final girl survivor so you know that there is not going to be a really bad ending.

Unfriended Film trailer.

Unfriended is a horror film which is yet to come out. it will be released later on this year. The reason in which I have chosen to analyse this is because I think it is a film that really reaches out to the modern day viewer. Social networking and technology is something that takes over teenagers lives and not just teenagers but most peoples. This film is around that genre so you get the real feeling of being scared and it hits quite close to home. I think this is a good idea for people of the modern day to get scared because it actually relates to something in their life. I like the way in which the trailer has loads of clips and jump scares. It also doesn't give too much away it just holds loads of best bits of the trailer and that is something that I liked.

June trailer analysis

June
sci-fi horror
2014
America
June is a sci-fi/horror film that is about a young girl who gets bullied but then she shows her real self by getting possessed almost. I like the use of the clip for the trailer because although I haven't been a big fan of these types of trailers because sometimes I feel they are too long or they can give too much away so I have chosen this one because I think it works really well because you get a glimpse into what is going on, but you still don't get the whole idea and you still have no idea what is to come. Unlike other horror trailers I have chosen to analyse this is one which is sci-fi this is also something I dont usually tend to like because it is too fake but with the way in which films have updated you are able to make it sci-fi without having all these aliens and creatures on the screen which gives it that more of a horror twist.

The Boy Next Door trailer analysis

The Boy next door:
thriller:
2015
The boy next door is a thriller film that is due to be coming out later this year (2015) its about a woman that falls in love with her younger next door neighbor but it soon takes a dangerous turn. The young man seems like he has nothing wrong but when she lets him into her life he soon turns nasty and dangerous. I like the way this trailer shows a lot of action scenes and the music really makes you feel tense. I like the fact just through the trailer you really get a glimpse of the nasty things that the neighbor gets up to and you really get into the characters head.

Insidious 3 trailer analysis

As a class we had to chose from a section of films in which we wanted to analyse. One of the ones we were given that i have chosen to analyse is the insidious 3 trailer.  which is a horror film which will be released later this year (2015). The reason I have chosen to analyse this trailer is because the use of jump scares work really well. There is one right at the start where there is also the use of a collision cutting the silence to then the scream of the girl works really well. This also follows the pattern of the stereotypical victim because a young girl being the target of the evil supernatural activity that is going on and also follows a similar patter for the stereotypical setting for a horror film because it is in a dark house although it is their home it is making it feel like it isn't home and i think this works really well because you don't expect bad things to happen at home and here it is. The fading in and out of the shots also adds effect because it feels that you don't know what is going to come next and really helps to build up tension throughout the trailer. The use of the whole family in the film really shows the use of closure and the use of panic throughout the characters in the film because you see that the evil is effecting everyone.

Cloverfield trailer analysis

Cloverfield is another film that was seen by the class that I have chosen to analyse. I chose this in comparison to the insidious trailer because unlike insidious which was a full horror, Cloverfield is more of an action, thriller and sci-fi. I think this works well in contrast because you can see how different horrors work just as well. I like the trailer for Cloverfield because starts off as there is just a party and the use of home video works really well here to add effect and make the film much more personal because it makes you feel for the people that are involved. As well I like the fact that this trailer is more of just a scene trailer without giving too much away it makes you want to know what happens in the rest of the film. Normally I feel that scene trailers can not give enough to be a good trailer but Cloverfield is one that I have found and which I have enjoyed to watch because It only gives a glimpse.

Toxic Avenger Film Trailer

Toxic avenger is another film that we watched the trailer for in class. This trailer is the one that I least enjoyed watching. This is because the trailer is very long at over 3 minutes the trailer tends to give too much away about the film. although I didn't really enjoy this film it does sell the genre of the horror film which is comedy horror. Another reason for me disliking the film is because it isn't very horror feeling maybe this is just because we are watching it as a modern day viewer. This film came out in 1984 therefore the type of horror that scares people has drastically changed. I don't like how this film has like a comedy side to it, I think this makes the film not for everyone's taste because it makes it hard to watch. It also has a really boring story line which for me is something that would make me want to turn it off. The fact that it is a comedy horror means that they have made the film to have the interest in more than one target audience, but this doesn't always work.
